Founded in 1988 by Liu Ruo-Yu, U-Theatre is influenced by the techniques of legendary theatre director Jerzy Grotowski. A key moment in the company’s development came in 1993 when Huang Chi-Chun joined them, bringing with him a strong drumming tradition that became a central element of their performances.

U-Theatre is known for its unique style that combines music, tai chi, ritual, theater and literature. Their performances impress audiences with their spiritual depth and physical precision. Even their name, taken from an ancient Chinese character, reflects their dedication to artistic excellence. U-Theatre captivates audiences on the best stages around the world – from Avignon to Edinburgh, from Lincoln Center in New York to the Setagaya Theater in Tokyo. Their performances are more than art – they are a journey of the body and spirit.
